The 2010 Winter Lecture Series: Pakistan and Afghanistan
The 2010 Winter Lecture Series will focus on Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Each two hour session will begin at 7:00 PM featuring a guest lecturer followed by a refreshment break and half hour of questions and dialogue. The seventh and final event will include a dinner at 6:00 and a panel discussion at 7:00. Dinner reservations may be made at one of the earlier sessions or through the church office.
Additional parking is available in the Catholic Social Services lot across Eldon Drive west of the church.

All sessions are open to the public and free of charge.
January 17: Sabahat Rafiq, an international investment banking consultant with experience in Pakistan will discuss the history of tribal and religious interactions that have shaped Pakistan.
January 24: Professor Jack Shroder, Assistant Dean of International Studies at UN of Omaha will discuss how the limited natural resources of the region contribute to cultural conflicts in teh region. This is the Hewes Lecture for 2010.
January 31: Dean Tom Gouttierre, Dean of International Studies at UN of Omaha and UN Medical Center, and Director of teh Center for Afghanistan Studies, will discuss how the changing social, political, religious, and military forces shaped education and educators in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
February 7: no session
February 14: Sabahat Rafiq will return to discuss Pakistan's struggle with the power of the army, the feudals, and the bureaucracy and will emphasize the Army's fluid relationship with the government and with tribal and ethnic groups.
This program is funded in part by the Nebraska Humanities Council and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment.
February 21: General Roger Lempke is Director of Military Affairs for Sen. Mike Johanns, a current consultant to officials in the US Government on Afghanistan, and former Adjutant General of Nebraska and a past Commander of the NE National Guard. He will discuss a history of the military conflicts in the region.
February 28: Dr. Shahid Kamal is a psychiatrist for the State of Nebraska and a native of Pakistan. He will discuss the history of India-Pakistan relations, including the Kashmir disupte.
March 7: A special dinner featuring food of the region will be begin at 5:00 pm. Cost of meal is $15. Sign up for the dinner is required. Please RSVP by March 3rd by calling the Unitarian Church at 483-2213 or emailing Karen Dienstbier at kdien[at]neb[dot]rr[dot]com.

At 7:00 pm Negah Angah, an Afghanistan specialist from the US State Department will be the lecturer. It is NOT necessary to come to the dinner in order to attend the lecture.
